Stories: The Moment

Dear God, what should I do?

Sophie stares at her feet and tries to think straight, which is really hard. The dim lights and soft music have already made the night more romantic than it should be, and now, his arms are around her. Everything feels so right.

Argh, stop it Sophie! She mentally shakes herself. The sensible thing to do is to take a step back from Chris, laugh off the incident and continue the night as though this is nothing significant. After all, she is so over Chris, and he is not into her at all. Right?

“Sophie? You okay?”

“Yeah, of course I am!” she replies in an unusually high-pitched voice. And she giggles. Argh, why did she giggle? Sophie, get a grip. You’re not sixteen any more, and Chris is no longer your crush! And, you’re an engaged woman!

He releases her and looks around them. “That’s what you get when the crowd builds up here. You get pushed around,” he says.

More people have crammed into the exhibition room in the last half an hour, and there is now hardly any room to stand without being elbowed. Seriously, why are so many people so fascinated with frogs?

“Yeah, but don’t worry, I’m fine. No harm done at all,” she giggles again. Stop it Sophie!

“Sophie, I, uh…” Chris is looking at her with an odd expression. “I just want to say…”

Sophie’s heart starts to race.

“You know, I should have told you this a long time ago, but… it didn’t… I wasn’t…”

It was getting noisier around them now, but all she can hear is his voice.

Chris looks down, takes a deep breath, and looks back at her. “Shall we go outside where it’s quieter?”
